The possibility of the proposed Crossrail 2 having a dramatic impact on Wimbledon town centre in south London has energised Friends of Wimbledon Town Centre.

The Friends have carried out a survey of the views of Wimbledon residents (conducted by Create Streets), and an online Placecheck. Together these have created a picture of what people value about Wimbledon town centre and how they would like any new development to be influenced by the character of the place.

The Friends will use the findings of the survey and the Placecheck to contribute to Merton Council’s borough character study and to its town centre masterplan, both of which are currently being prepared.

The Placecheck (which is still live) was carried out through two walkabouts, and with other people contributing online. It has been used particularly to build up a record of Wimbledon town centre’s heritage. The spreadsheet that the Placecheck automatically generates records details of valued buildings, and what people think of them.
